ACMG Releases 2008 Policy Statement on Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing

With ongoing genetic discoveries and improvements in technology, more genetic tests are available than ever before. Along with greater availability has come increased demand for genetic tests and the expansion of direct-to-consumer (DTC) testing and advertising of such genetic tests. To assist ACMG members in addressing questions concerning DTC genetic testing, ACMG has developed an ACMG 2008 Policy Statement on Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing. This guideline is designed primarily as an educational resource to help clinicians and genetic counselors provide quality medical services and advise patients. The guideline is completely voluntary and, of course, the clinician should apply his or her professional judgment to the specific clinical circumstance.

The ACMG 2008 Policy Statement on Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing includes five minimum prerequisites for a genetic testing protocol. Click here for the ACMG Policy Statement.

ACMG RAISES VISIBILITY OF GENETICS PROFESSION ON NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO:

ACMG to Sponsor NPR Programs "Morning Edition," "All Things Considered," "Science Friday," "Diane Rehm" and Evening News

Beginning the week of June 16, more than two million NPR listeners will hear sponsorship segments on the important role of medical genetics and how ACMG members help the public to obtain safe, quality genetics services. ACMG will be sponsoring shows on WAMU, the NPR station in the Washington, DC metro area (and 3rd largest NPR station in the US) and will also be a national NPR sponsor of the Diane Rehm show with more than 1.7 million listeners.

Through this NPR sponsorship, ACMG is educating the public, federal government officials and Washington’s science and medical community about the clinical genetics profession and raising the awareness and visibility of ACMG’s accomplishments. "We believe NPR is a very good vehicle to raise the visibility of the medical genetics profession, and the Washington, DC area is very important to our field," says Michael S. Watson, PhD, FACMG, Executive Director of the College.

These radio spots are being made possible by the support of the American College of Medical Genetics Foundation (ACMGF). ACMGF President R. Rodney Howell, MD, FACMG says, "Partnering with National Public Radio is a great way to talk about the important care that board certified geneticists and genetic counselors provide to the public. This public outreach effort will help to put the spotlight on both ACMG and our profession as a whole."

The NPR segments will encourage listeners to visit the ACMG website and to find an ACMG member in their area by using the online "Find a Geneticist" tool at www.acmg.net. After evaluating many options, National Public Radio became a good choice for ACMG for a variety of reasons. For example, according to Jacobs Media Research, 95% of NPR listeners take action in response to hearing sponsorship credits and 80% of listeners have a more positive opinion of an organization when they discover that the organization sponsors NPR. "By combining a focused campaign in our nation’s capital along with some targeted national exposure, we are reaching important audiences while keeping the budget reasonable," says Kathy Beal, MBA, ACMG’s public relations director.

The Diane Rehm Show is an award-winning NPR call-in program that offers its more than 1.7 million weekly listeners thoughtful conversations on a broad array of topics with many of the most renowned people of our times.
