Importance of Early Exposure Programs
Workforce
Increasing the workforce will address the current shortage and provide better representation of the patient population.
Early exposure programs afford students the opportunity to discover their interest in potential career paths.
Exposing students to professionals in the genetics field can increase their curiosity and willingness to gain a deeper understanding of the medical specialty.
The E3 Genomics Pathways Program directly supports ACMG’s 2025-2029 Strategic Plan, particularly under Pillar 4: Expanding the genetics and genomics workforce. The program aligns with key objectives to promote innovative training paths and highlight career opportunities for high school juniors, seniors, and community college/undergraduate students.
Program Objectives
To introduce underrepresented students to career pathways in medical genetics and genomics.
To enhance students’ understanding of genetics and genomics.
To engage students in targeted career development activities and real-world applications of genetic principles.
To provide the opportunity for students to meet and network with genetic professionals.
To increase the number of students with an expressed intent of terminal STEM degree.
Through outreach, mentorship, and educational engagement, the E3 Genomics Pathways Program raises awareness of genetics and genomics careers, encouraging students to explore these fields and pursue careers in science.
